If you are visiting a rescue shelter and see a Shih Tzu or any other breed of dog that needs help, rescuing them when you can is the best gift of all. With so many dogs of all types in rescue shelters with no hope of being adopted, you should consider getting one if you are looking to take care of a dog.
A Shih Tzu is not a common find in a rescue shelter, mostly because they are highly prized. But because they are also high maintenance it is possible that you may find one unexpectedly left at a rescue shelter. If you are considering rescuing a Shih Tzu or any breed of dog, here are some reasons why you should do so.
Save a Life
Rescue shelters are the last stop for dogs that are not wanted. If they are not adopted by a pre-set date, then they are euthanized. With so many loving, healthy dogs available it makes perfect sense for your next dog to be one that is rescued from a shelter. And if the dog you rescue is a Shih Tzu, then all the better since you do not have to pay a breeder for one.
Behavior
Rescue shelters focus on housing dogs that are well behaved so they can be rescued. This means that the Shih Tzu you get should have a good temperament or at least acceptably well behaved when you adopt them for your home. It may take a little time for them to adjust to their new surroundings, but once they feel safe, secure, and are loved by you and your family, they will relax and feel at home.
Proper Care
Many dogs in the shelter have been spayed or neutered which means that you can avoid unwanted accidents. Plus, they have often received basic veterinary care which means they have received shots for heartworms. This does not mean that these dogs are in perfect health, but all things considered, they are reasonably well and perfectly suited for most homes.
Well Trained
For the most part, dogs in a rescue shelter have already been trained in terms of obedience and many are housebroken. Of course, you will still have to train them to a certain degree, but much of the work has been done for you. This means that you can spend less time training and more time enjoying your new pet.
You Know What You Get
The Shih Tzus you find at shelters are mostly adults which means that what you see in terms of their size and behavior is what you get. There are far fewer surprises when you adopt a dog from a rescue shelter, even Shih Tzus
There is something special about receiving a dog from a rescue shelter. This means you get a warm, fuzzy feeling knowing that you have saved this animal and have made them a part of your home. If you find that Shih Tzu you have always wanted, the all the better and without having to pay a breeder.
I am a senior citizen aged 81 and l would like to know of rescue shelters in the Cleveland area. I live alone and would love to rescue a Shih Tuz male preferred. We could be a companions to each other, and l have a big back yard he could play in. I would appreciate any information you could give me. Thank you.
Shirley you can look on Pet Finder. Com or try googling furbaby rescue, I see a lot of these dogs for adoption on their Facebook page.
