Shih Tzu Temperament

Shih Tzu Temperament

Shih tzus are beautiful, loving dogs that have a temperament just like any other dog, although the combination of behaviors are unique to the shih tzu. Understanding the temperament of your shih tzu will help you better understand your dog, their needs, and how to keep them healthy and happy for the rest of their lives.

Typical Behavior Traits

While an individual shih tzu may vary in terms of what temperament they display, most shih tzus share a common set of behaviors that are based around the following.

  • Confidence
  • Dignified
  • Friendly
  • Trusting

For such a little dog, it’s probably a little surprising just how confident a shih tzu can be. These four basic traits are generally present when they are pups. But as the shih tzu grows older they may add a little to the basic personality that they possess.

For one thing, that confidence which has them jumping from the couch to your lap may turn more into restful slumber as they age. The energy they had as a pup starts to disappear when they become adults and only slows down more over time. This may be replaced with other traits such as being clingy.

This is somewhat common with smaller dogs, such as chihuahuas for example. Since shih tzus tend to be indoor dogs, it’s common for them to be the center of your attention. This clingy behavior can have positive attributes as they guard you through the day and night. But sometimes it can be annoying when trying to talk with guests.

Friendly

If there is one aspect that is common with almost all shih tzus, it is that they are quite friendly to you and your family. They are also friendly to guests and other family members as well, even their pets. This is because they were bred to be companion dogs and friendliness is a trait that is common with them. They are also quite excitable when in such situations.

Not Aggressive

This will depend on the home environment to a certain degree, but shih tzus are generally not aggressive by nature. You can help reinforce their non-aggressive behavior by learning how to read their body language, so that you can communicate with them more effectively. Otherwise, a shih tzu might adopt more aggressive behavior to get your attention.

Training

There is a general perception that smaller dogs are more difficult to train. That may be because most smaller dogs tend to be companion dogs and were not bred to perform specific tasks. Shih tzus can be trained just like any other dog. You just have to be patient and persistent with them. This means that it may take longer to potty train them. And you might want guidance from a professional trainer, but they can be trained.

The key to understanding shih tzu temperament is that they were bred to be companion dogs and they are driven to be the best that they can be. This means being with you, taking care of you, and receiving attention from you. When done in the right way, a shih tzu is quite friendly and loving.
