This attribute is not surprising given that shih tzus are quite loyal and loving dogs that have traits which can be perceived as stubborn. But whether a shih tzu is really stubborn or is demonstrating behavior that can be described as something else is important to know when in this situation.

Inherited Trait

Dogs are quite sophisticated when it come to their DNA. With 78 chromosomes that contain over 19,000 genes that are protein-coding, it is believed that upwards of 60% of their temperament is determined by their inherited traits. It other words, if their parents were stubborn, the likelihood that they will be stubborn is a possibility.

We know that humans who have such personality traits can inherit them from their parents, so it is not out of the realm of possibility that you may be dealing with genetics along with their personality. But the real question is what you can do about it.

Working with a Stubborn Shih Tzu

The other factor that plays a strong role in the personality of a shih tzu is the environment that they live. The more open and loving the environment, the more trust is present. When combined with proper discipline it can lead to a lessening of the stubborn trait. Keep in mind that discipline is not punishing your shih tzu, but rather creating an environment through repetition of behavior that lowers the level of stubbornness in their responses.

Training: Dogs can be trained, even stubborn shih tzus. Employing a combination of training with motivation can help you deal with your shih tzu in the right way. What may be perceived as stubborn is really not providing the shih tzu with enough motivation for them to respond properly or they lack the training to understand what to do.

What you need to do is identify the reason why you see stubbornness in your shih tzu. It can come from different sources.

  • They do not understand what to do
  • They are not used to being talked to in that manner
  • They simply want your attention
  • There is something they want that you do not understand.

When faced with such reasons, it can be difficult at first to identify the issue. But there is a way for you to respond.

Patience & Understanding: Observe what your shih tzu is doing during the times in which they seem stubborn. Once you take yourself out of the picture, it may become clear why a shih tzu is acting the way they do. Here is what you can do to help overcome such conditions.

  • Treats: A treat is a good motivator to get them out of their shell
  • Motivate: Show your happiness in being with them
  • Train: This helps your shih tzu overcome distractions

You’ll need patience and understanding, but also consistency when training your shih tzu to help them overcome their stubbornness.
