7 Everyday Shih Tzu Health Tips to Live by

Health Habits

There are things you can do to keep your Shih Tzu healthy and active for their entire lives. A little care each day means that your Shih Tzu is a happy Shih Tzu. Here are seven simple tips that will help your Shih Tzu every day.

Clean Water

There is nothing like having cool, clean water available for your Shih Tzu. Your dog will need about ½ to one ounce of water per pound of their weight. So, a 15-pound Shih Tzu will need 10 to 15 ounces of water per day. They will need more if they are still a puppy or it is hot, so be sure that you have plenty of water available.

Fitness

Your Shih Tzu does not need to be a track star but playing with your dog every day will help keep them fit and healthy. From a short walk to playing tug-of-war to a game of hide-and-seek, a little activity each day will keep them healthy for a long time.

Food Balance

How much should you feed your Shih Tzu? That question may not be so easy to answer. Your Shih Tzu has both nutritional and calorie needs that must be fulfilled without overdoing it. Addressing the nutritional aspect is not difficult. Simply purchase the dog food with the right balance of nutrients. But how much to feed your Shih Tzu is another matter. Talk to your vet about the right portions that they should eat.

Groom Daily

Brushing the fur of your Shih Tzu will help get rid of the unwanted hair that otherwise might wind up on your couch or rug. Plus, you should check them for any fleas or ticks that might be present. Combine daily grooming with ensuring that they are taking their flea and tick medication and you will have a happy dog.

Paws

Examine the paws of your Shih Tzu to determine if there are any sore spots, cracks, or dry areas. A persistent issue may be skin mites which are difficult to see but can do damage to their paws. You will need to take your Shih Tzu to the vet is the problem persists.

Teeth & Gums

Good oral care today may prevent cavities or gum issues tomorrow. This means brushing their teeth starting when they are young, so they get used to it. You should also check the gums of your Shih Tzu to ensure that they are healthy. You can purchase chew toys that are dental approved to help keep their teeth clean and gums healthy.

Vet

Taking your dog to the vet can help address current health issues while helping to prevent future ones. You will need to take your dog regularly for annual checkups. And, you will need to take them in when something is wrong. If your Shih Tzu needs extra care, such as if they are anxious, have ears that need regular cleaning, or simply training tips, the vet is here for you.

A little care can go a long way towards helping your Shih Tzu live a long and healthy life.
