Five Common Misconceptions about Shih Tzu Adoption

Adopting any dog can be a challenge, but the Shih Tzu is a special breed that does require extra attention. If you have the chance to adopt such an animal, then you should be aware of the myths that surround adopting a dog.

Adopting is Free

Well, no it is not if you get a Shih Tzu from the right shelter. While you may not pay an initial cost, there are the vaccinations that must be performed if you want to keep your Shih Tzu healthy. You will be encouraged to spay or neuter your Shih Tzu unless you plan on breeding the dog. Also consider heartworm tests, treatments for fleas and ticks, and implanting a microchip. All the costs will add up over time.

The Shelter Offers Few Choices

If you use a service such as Petfinder, then you should have more choices, especially if you live in or near a large city. Keep in mind that many shelters will list the breeds of dogs available, including Shih Tzus. You can even have Petfinder email you when a Shih Tzu is available for adoption in your area.

Something is Wrong with the Shih Tzu

This is a common misconception that many people have about animal shelters. People give up their dogs for a wide variety of reasons with misbehavior actually being one of the less common ones. The most common reasons why people leave their pets at shelters include the following.

  • New residence does not allow pets
  • Allergic reactions
  • Not enough room for littermates
  • Cannot afford the pet
  • Does not have time for the pet

Shih Tzus do require attention which may be more than the previous owner could give. So, keep that in mind when looking for one at a shelter.

Not Knowing the Personality

In fact, the staff at most shelters can tell you a great deal about a Shih Tzu or any other pet because they feed and care for them daily. They can relate their personalities, traits, and other important information about how the dog acts. You should work with the staff at the shelter to find the one that best fits your home and needs.

Lack of Information

It seems logical that Shih Tzus which are up for adoption may have little to no information on them. After all, they can be expensive pups when purchased from a breeder. But in many cases, a Shih Tzu up for adoption will have plenty of good information available. This usually starts with foster care which can report on how the dog behaves, feeding habits, and any quirks. Remember that most pets are given up not because they are a problem, but because the owners could no longer care for them.

There are many misconceptions about adopting Shih Tzus from a shelter. So, you should keep an eye out for one if you want a Shih Tzu as a pet. A Shih Tzu from a shelter can make for a great pet if you care for it properly.

One Comment

  1. I adopted my amazing Beaux from a shelter. He is the perfect member of our family. The vet figured he was about 2 years old. He was found roaming the streets. He was well taken care of being groomed and well trained. The previous owner DID NOT HAVE HIM CHIPPED! Please be sure to have you fur babies chipped. So grateful somebody called.to have him picked up instead of being hit by a car.
