Tips on Training A Shih Tzu Puppy

One of the first things a new pet owner has to deal with is housebreaking a puppy. Since this little animal is going to live with you for the rest of his life and inside your home, it is best to also let him know your rules and regulations. This is not only for the safety of your puppy; but also for you and your ease of moving around your home. You wouldn’t want to step on some poo when you come out of the bathroom and slip down on some chew toys when you get in a room, right? Here are some things to keep in mind.

1.Start with confinement.

Confine the puppy in the area where you would want him to pee and poo. You can place a rag, a mat or a pad on that specific area and allow the puppy to use it as his toilet. Through time, the smell and location of this area will surely be associated with his elimination needs.

2. Rotate the toys.

Just like humans, puppies can also get used to things they always see. Familiarization will definitely bore your puppy out of his toys. And when this happens, he will surely look for something else to chew on. Expect this chewing behavior until six to eight months of age as this is the time where the baby teeth get replaced by permanent ones.

3. Use positive reinforcement.

When it is time to allow your pup to roam freely around the house, watch him closely. When he does something you want like peeing on the designated area and chewing on his toy and not the furniture, then give him an assuring reward and praises. This will help him remember the need-to-do’s more effectively.

4. Expose your puppy to all parts of the house.

When you are inside the house, leash-train your pup inside. This will lessen the unfamiliar feeling and will surely decrease his noisy-ness when off leashed. Place him away from the bed, couches, tables, and chairs as animals, when allowed to take over another’s comfy area tend to be more stubborn and domineering.

5. Understand your puppy.

You may not be a dog but thinking like one will help you a lot in understanding what your puppy needs. There may be times when your patience will be tested, but always remember that this animal is as unfamiliar with your world as you are to his. Giving some allowance and doing research will help lessen as apathy and gain more compassion and concern as an owner. Taking care of a pet needs a lot of heart and understanding.
